Dagger and asterisk dual classification
A generalized disease with an organ-specific manifestation is described by two codes: the aetiology (dagger) and the manifestation (asterisk).
Diagnosis typing for the DAD
Inpatient abstracts type every diagnosis so that comorbidity burden and timing can be analysed.
Criteria for significance
A coexisting condition is only coded as a comorbidity when it meets at least one of three tests.
Specificity
Always code to the highest level of detail the clinical record supports.
Acute and chronic conditions
When both an acute and a chronic form of the same condition are documented and separate codes exist, both are assigned.
Unconfirmed diagnosis
A diagnosis qualified as probable, suspected, questionable or rule-out is handled differently from a confirmed one.
Diagnosis cluster
Clustering links codes that must be read together - typically a manifestation or complication with its cause.
