Criteria for significance
A coexisting condition is only coded as a comorbidity when it meets at least one of three tests.
Ce que cela signifie en pratique
- It requires treatment beyond maintenance of the pre-existing condition.
- It increases the length of stay by at least 24 hours.
- It significantly affects the treatment received.
- Ongoing medication for a pre-existing condition, or a dose change on its own, does not establish significance - the record must show a change in the condition that required it.
- Diagnoses appearing only on the front sheet, discharge summary, history and physical or pre-operative anaesthetic consult are secondary (type 3) unless documented elsewhere as meeting a significance criterion.
