Clustering links codes that must be read together - typically a manifestation or complication with its cause.
What this means in practice
- A device or procedural complication is clustered with the external cause code that identifies the procedure (for example Y83.-).
- Clustering preserves the relationship between codes on the abstract so that downstream analysis does not read them as independent conditions.
- The explorer shows the paired external-cause code on iatrogenic and post-procedural cards.
