Stages of chronic kidney disease
CKD is staged, and the stage must be reflected in the code when documented.

- Assign N18.1 to N18.5 according to the documented stage; N18.9 is reserved for genuinely unstaged disease.
- Acute kidney injury on a background of CKD is coded with both conditions - see the Acute on Chronic Kidney Disease standard.
