External cause and place of occurrence
An injury or poisoning code is incomplete without the circumstance that produced it.

- External cause codes (V01-Y98) are mandatory additional codes for injuries, poisonings and adverse effects.
- Place of occurrence (U98.-) is captured according to jurisdictional direction.
- Complications of internal devices are clustered with the external cause code identifying the procedure that placed them.
